Since Alice Walker’s initial use of “womanism” in the late 1970s, the term has evolved to a description of various perspectives on the situations and experiences of black women.  In this class, we will analyze canonical works by black woman writers such as Alice Walker, Maya Angelou, Toni Morrison or Toni Cade Bambara. We will also look into some more theoretical statements and essays such as by The Combahee River Collective or Angela Davis. The course offers a deeper understanding of the concept of womanism, womanist thought and theory and will encourage participants to reflect current discussions about abolition, intersectionality and equity.

Please purchase and start reading Alice Walker's The Color Purple.
