Representations of Rape

Course Information

Nr. Name Type Time Room Lecturer
154527 Representations of Rape 2 HS Th 12:15 - 13:45 R. 3.208 Lenz

TRIGGER WARNING!!!
This course deals with literary and cultural representations of sexual abuse and violence.

Women have been subjected to physical and sexual violence much longer than the #MeToo movement might have one realise. Stereotypically considered the weaker sex as well as an object for men to do with as they please for centuries, women have suffered. Courageous women have finally managed to draw attention to this abuse and changed the lives of many forever. And, of course, sexual abuse is not limited to heterosexual cis women…

We will look at historical texts as well as contemporary ones and consider various genres and text sorts. We will discuss these at intersections of sex, gender, class, ethnicity, nationality and geography.

A list of required reading will be made available during the first session.

Credits will be awarded on the basis of either:

  • a term paper
  • a written exam
  • an oral presentation
  • ‘Aktive Teilnahme’

Personal attendance during the first session is required to maintain enrolment status.
