This seminar explores literary and cultural texts of the so-called Windrush Generation and their meanings for post-war and 21st-century British culture. Through critical analysis of primary texts, historical documents, media and relevant secondary literature, we will examine the experiences, challenges, and contributions of Caribbean immigrants who arrived in Britain between 1948 and 1971.
Our class will foster understanding of the post-war decades in the UK, historical awareness of the origins of British multicultural society as well as intercultural competence. The course will delve into themes of identity, belonging, racism, colonialism, cultural hybridity, and diaspora, providing a comprehensive understanding of the Windrush Generation's legacy in British literature and culture. Primary texts to be purchased are Small Island (2004) by Andrea Levy and The Lonely Londoners (1956) by Samuel Selvon (any edition). Poetry, shorter texts/excerpts and secondary literature will be made available via Moodle.
