In this course, we look at the ideologies surrounding language use in different contexts, and consider how attitudes and ideologies have changed over time. We also reflect on societal factors which shape language ideologies. We look at the different direct and indirect methods through which language ideologies and attitudes are studied, and engage with major studies which use each of the main methods. Our focus will be on ideologies and attitudes surrounding varieties of English, but we will also consider a few other key cases. All readings, however, will be in English. As part of the course, students will be involved in the design of a small-scale attitudinal study, applying the different methods learned.
There is no course text, but readings will be provided in advance of the course start.
Course requirements will be discussed in the first session.
