FAQs

Below you find a list of the most common questions. We have collected them and put down short answers.

Should this FAQ not answer your particular question, feel free to contact us.

Dates and Campus Life

The start date is usually the first day of the lecture period or the first day of the intensive German course, should you attend one (it is free and helps to get around Dortmund and Germany more easily). The last day is usually the day of the last exam you write here.

The exam dates are usually announced during the first session. This only applies for written exams; many courses conclude with essays or term papers which can be handed in digitially: talk to your lecturer after the first session.

TU Dortmund University has a website dedicated to the most important dates

TU Dortmund has a rich campus life with many events and clubs. A general overview can be found here.

Both our department and the International Office host a variety of events - many of which can be found on the website "International Events" from the International Office.

Learning Agreement, Certificates and Exams

Both certificates are issued by the International Office. You can find more information on this in the checklists that you can obtain from the International Office. If you have any questions, please contact the Coordination Office for Erasmus Exchange Students at TU Dortmund University.

For each course, you need to send your lecturer this course certificate. Fill in as much as you can already. You should have discussed the ECTS that you get awarded for successfully completing the course beforehand. Collect all course certificates and send them to your supervisor at TU Dortmund University. They will compile the Transcript of Records and forward it to you. We can also send it to your Erasmus coordinator at your home university if you could provide us with their email address.

Language courses can be included in the Transcript of Records if the final certificate of the course (with grade and ECTS credits) is sent to the Erasmus coordination of the faculty.

In most of the cases, you have to compile your Learning Agreement online. Incoming exchange students usually can find it here or get a pdf from their home university / Erasmus coordinator.

Some more information can be found on this website for outgoing exchange students.

Since we are a team of coordinators, you will get asigned one once you have been nominated by your home university. We try to get in contact with you as soon as possible, but in order to fill in the documents please use the following:

At our department we offer a variety of different courses from the subjects of American and British studies, linguistics and English language teaching. You can find a list of courses from the previous semester and a preliminary list of courses for the upcoming semester here. Please be aware that sometimes there have to be last minute changes, but you can address these with your supervisor once you are in Dortmund.

As a component course you may use the six-digit number starting with 154xxx.

We try to compile a preliminary list as soon as possible. Should you want to compile your Learning Agreement already, however, use the courses from the previous semester (see: What courses can I put in my Learning Agreement?). There will probably be changes to that schedule then but these changes can be addressed with your Erasmus coordinator at TU Dortmund Unversity once the new semester has begun.

Yes, this is generally possible. However, at least 50% of your courses must come from our faculty. It also depends on the availability of places and the agreement of the lecturers of the course you wish to take. A list of courses from other faculties can be found in this list compiled by the International Office.

Requests for courses from other faculties must be discussed in advance with the Erasmus Coordination Office

Important: Questions about examinations and examination dates for courses from other faculties must be discussed with the coordinators and lecturers of the respective faculty/course. The examination dates of the individual faculties are planned separately and an overlap cannot be ruled out.

It is not necessary for the Learning Agreement to be signed by all parties in order to enrol at TU Dortmund University. A draft of the Learning Agreement is sufficient for us to see the your course selection.

It may happen that you do not want to or cannot continue a course that you chose before you registered - perhaps the course is cancelled, is simply not what you had in mind, or you would prefer to choose a different course that better suits your interests. That's not a problem! Just get in touch with us and let us know which course you would like to swap. If you drop or add courses, you can simply enter this in table A2 in your learning agreement in the ‘During mobility’ section. We will then sign it for you. Don't forget to consult your home university beforehand.

Courses (Lectures, Seminars, Tutorials)

On this website, you can see courses from the previous and upcoming semester. Our introductory courses (first years) are usually conceived as lectures that should be combined with a tutorial. (For the Introduction to Linguistics, you need a "Vorlesungsbegleitende Übung"!) Proseminars are for first to second year students as they tend to build on the subjects from the introductory lectures. Hauptseminare are courses for advanced students and they have a specific focus.

With your learning agreement, we get an idea what courses you want to attend. If the course is from our department, there are no problems: you will always get a place. Should you choose courses from another department or faculty, we need to ask the lecturers on your behalf. But this usually poses no problem - just let us know if you have chosen such a course in advance.

Yes, this is possible if the lecturers of the courses agree. However, it is important to bear in mind that these courses are aimed at Master's students and therefore require a range of prior subject knowledge and methodological understanding. It is therefore recommended that you have already completed a number of thematically relevant Bachelor's courses. If in doubt, talk to us.

Yes, there are several language courses at TU Dortmund University. There is also a 4-week intensive German course offered especially for exchange students in September and March. These courses are free of charge and open to all students. Further information can be found on the website of the International Office.

Please note that, apart from the intensive German course for international students, we cannot include any language courses in the Learning Agreement. However, they can be entered in the Transcript of Records.

At the department for English and American studies, all our courses are held in English. Other departments and faculties tend to use German as the predominant language. If you want to attend a course from another department or faculty which is in German, please let us know so that we can ask on your behalf.

Please be aware that your German proficiency should at least be B2 level to be able to follow the course.

Yes, this is possible. You should let your departmental supervisor at TU Dortmund University (and your home university) know which courses you would like to attend. They will get into contact with us and we will facilitate in that matter.

Every course concludes with an assigment. This assigment can vary but is usually in the form of a term paper, a written test or an oral presentation. You will find out how you pass each course in that respective course's first session. If you have any questions, ask your lecturer after the first session and also let them know how many ECTS you need for that course.

The majority of written exams take place in the last week of the lecture period, but it might be the case that they have to be moved to the first or second week after the lecture period has ended. You might want to take this into consideration when you plan your stay in Dortmund. Essays, term papers and other longer assignments can usually be handed in digitally.

You do not need to register for any exam, unless your lecturer specifically says so. But you should tell them how you plan on obtaining your ECTS.

Once you have received a notification that you have passed a course, send your lecturer this course certificate. Collect all your filled in and signed course certificates and then send them to your supervisor at our department. They will compile a Transcript of Records which you can had in at your home university.
