Before the Stay: Preparations

Application Process

You want to spend your semester or year abroad with us? A very good choice! We look forward to welcoming you here.

  • Erasmus+ Students: As soon as you have been nominated by your home university, you will be informed by our International Office about the further application procedure.
  • Students with other exchange agreements: We will be your direct contact and will get in touch with you once you have been nominated.

Following your application and acceptance, the "Guest and Exchange Students" team from the International Office will send you a checklist. Please read this checklist very carefully, as all generally relevant topics are included and almost all questions are already answered here.

Academic Supervision: Choosing Courses

Our job as departmental coordinators is to help you organise the academic part of your stay: choosing your courses and compiling your Learning Agreement. Below you will find a list of courses offered in English. We offer a wide range of courses at both Bachelor's and Master's level.

It might be that the course schedule for the coming semester is not be available until shortly before the start of the semester. You can view the course schedule from the previous semester to get a better idea of courses that are usually offered. Please note that this is merely to serve as orientation: while the introductory courses are always offered each semester, the topics of proseminars and Hauptseminare as well as the content of English Language Skills classes might be subject to change.

Below, you can find the current course catalogue for winter term 2025 / 2026. (Please note that this is only a summary list and there might still be changes to the course catalogue.) For a detailed and up-to-date catalogue, you can click at the button "Current Course Database".

Erasmus+ Students: Learning Agreement

Once you have selected your courses for your stay, it is time to complete the Learning Agreement. Your home university can advise you on this as well. In most cases, you will complete your Learning Agreement online and then send it to us online after it has been signed by you and your home university. As soon as we have checked the courses you have chosen, we will also sign the Learning Agreement online for you.

Sometimes, Word documents (.doc or .docx files) are used instead of the Online Learning Agreement. Should that be the case with your department, please upload (at least a preliminary version of) the Learning Agreement in your application and send updated versions as .pdf files to erasmus.englisch.fk15tu-dortmundde

Semester and Examination Periods

In the regular degree program at TU Dortmund University, examinations or assignments are written and submitted during the lecture-free period. For exchange students, the same rules usually apply. In most cases, term papers can be handed electronically should you leave for your home country after the lecture period has officially ended. It is best to talk to your lecturers and your departmental coordinator / academic advisor at our department about the specific requirements - also to ensure your semester will run as smoothly as possible.

Lecture periods can vary every semester and you should consult the official semester periods of TU Dortmund University. You should plan to stay in Dortmund at least until the last day of the official lecture period is over (attendance) and you have discussed the modalities with your examiner as to how you will fulfil the requirements for your respective courses (course completion). Usually, those dates are around the beginning of February for the winter term and end of July for the summer term (these times are subject to change).
