Application Process for Erasmus+

Bachelor's students who are in their 3rd semester before their semester abroad and Master's students can apply. Please note that some partner universities are only open to Bachelor's or Master's students, or only offer courses in English for one of the two study levels.

Three Easy Steps to your Stay Abroad with Erasmus+

Interested students should first find out about the requirements for the stay abroad and partner universities as well as the courses offered at the respective universities. To this end, there is always an information event in October on the partner universities and application modalities, as well as on the Erasmus program as such. The information is highlighted on the homepage. Participation in the information event is not mandatory in order to apply for a place in the exchange program at the faculty, but it is highly recommended.

Application Deadline: 15 November

Apply by this date for a place in the next academic year (in the next winter semester or in the summer semester thereafter). The selection process will take place before the end of the year and students will be informed of acceptance or rejection by the end of December

Although students of English can only use a rich English-speaking environment to count towards their stay abroad, we can offer a variety of partner universities all over Europe. And while this might not be an English-speaking environment per se, many courses will be offered in the English language and you can use them to get credit for a course here. If you have questions about this, please send us an email

Did you miss the deadline? Please inquire via email if there are some spots still available.

Application Documents

In order to apply for a place inthe Erasmus+ program please create an account on MoveOn (German English). Applications which are not sent through this platform cannot be considered.

Please submit the following documents via the online application portal:

  • Online application form
  • Letter of motivation (max. 3 pages, in English)
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Current certificate of enrollment
  • Academic transcripts (e.g. from BOSS)
  • Proof of language skills of your chosen host country and / or host university (if available or required)

Selection Process

The selection of suitable students for the places is based on the following criteria

  • Completeness of documents
  • The letter of motivation includes the following topics: brief personal introduction and suitability; reasons for selecting the first choice (university); plans / ideas to promote TU Dortmund University and our department abroad

Preference will be given to students who are involved internationally (e.g. in the Buddy Program of the International Office).

Offer of a Place in the Erasmus+ Program

After the end of the selection process (end of December), students will be contacted and receive an offer of a place for a university abroad via MoveOn. In some cases, if there are more applicants than places, a rejection will be sent out.

If the selected students accept the place, they will be nominated by the faculty at the host university and can then apply there in a second step. Additionally, you will be invited to join the network of current and previous students from our department that have had experiences with your host university - or are still there.

Once you have been selected by your department for the Erasmus+ program, you must submit the Online Acceptance Form, which is also the application for an Erasmus+ mobility grant. Please be aware that the deadline is 31 March, regardless whether your stay is in the winter semester or summer semester.

It is still possible to register for the program and for the tuition fee waiver after this date, but it cannot be guaranteed that you will receive a financial grant.

In case your application at our department is successful, we will nominate you at your chosen host university. Following this, your host university will contact you and ask for an application. The exact requirements and necessary documents vary from university to university.
