Learning Agreement and Credit Recognition
The Learning Agreement is an integral part of the Erasmus program and is an agreement between the student, TU Dortmund University and the host university. It sets out which courses you will attend at the host university and which courses will be recognized at TU Dortmund University.
In order to recognize the credits you earn abroad, you need a recognition agreement (Anerkennungsvereinbarung). Since courses to be recognized should already be specified in the Learning Agreement, you should take care of the recognition agreements before your mobility period. This involves checking whether the courses at the host university and the courses at TU Dortmund University that you wish to have recognized are comparable in terms of content and assignments.
The Learning Agreement provides a transparent and efficient preparation for your exchange. It is also a prerequisite for receiving the mobility grant.
How to Get Courses Recognized
- Ideally, you choose a university which offers courses that are of interest to you and that further your understanding of the subject you are studying. Moreover, you still have not completed all your courses at TU Dortmund University
- Check the courses at your host university: what interests you and which courses do you still need to complete at TU Dortmund University?
- Find courses that match. But we are usually fine with courses that are from the same department and which deal with similar topics. It is also advisable to choose more courses than you will eventually take - there is always the possibility that a course chosen by you is not offered when you are at your host university.
- Fill in the recognition agreement. Should you need more space, download a second (!) recognition agreement and fill it in accordingly, but state in the field "Zusätzliche Bemerkungen" that this is the second page.
- Talk to the professor(s) responsible for the module(s) you intend to substitute course(s) from, they need to check the course(s) and sign off on the recognition agreement. This needs to be done for all your chosen courses!
Once you have returned from your stay abroad and have received your transcript of records, send both the transcript and your recognition agreement to Cyprian Piskurek. The grades will be added to BOSS.
General Information about the Recognition Process
You can also find general information about the credit recognition process in the International Office's checklist for stays abroad.
FAQ: Learning Agreement and Recognition Agreement
According to the Erasmus agreement, you have get 30 ECTS from your host university. Some universities offer courses that are accredited with 3 to 6 ECTS, some universities offer modules with up to 10 ECTS. It is best to peruse their course catalogue and choose more courses than you will eventually need. This also allows you some liberties should a course not be offered for example.
It gives you and your professors the assurance that the courses can be credited later. In addition, your chosen courses are also recorded in the learning agreement, and this document is important for the host university. But if your grades have to be entered into BOSS later, the recognition agreement makes the entire process easier.
Technically, this is possible. However, this needs to be discussed with the professor responsible for the module you want to complete abroad before you actually leave for your host university. Additonally, this needs to be marked on your recognition agreement in the field "Zusätzliche Bemerkungen" and we reserve the right to look at the assignment(s) after you have returned in order to check for compatibility.
In order for the Erasmus program to fund you fully, you need to be awarded 30 ECTS at your host university. Sometimes, you cannot find enough courses that would be of interest to you. First of all, make sure that you have the actual course catalogue for the semester you are staying at your host university: sometimes the recognition agreement / learning agreement needs to be filled in before the final course catalogue is online. In that case you only have the previous semester's courses to go by. That means there might be more courses that you can choose from. If that still does not help, talk to your Erasmus coordinator at TU Dortmund University: we might be able to find courses from other faculties at your home university that can be counted towards the 30 ECTS (= learning agreement), but maybe not to your recognition agreement. Remember: studying abroad is not just for advancing your studies, but also to experience a different university, city, country and culture.
In many cases, the learning agreement only needs to be completed a few weeks before the stay, or no deadline is set (however, it must be completed before the stay, i.e. signed by all three parties: you, your coordinator at your home university and your supervisor at your host university). In some cases, however, the learning agreement must be submitted with the application. If this is the case for you and you are unable to arrange for recognition in time, you can leave Table B blank for the time being (or enter “0” in the online learning agreement).
The learning agreement can be changed later by adding the relevant courses to Table B2 “Under the mobility.”
If you have any doubts, always talk to your supervisor at TU Dortmund University.
Yes. This does not always have to be done immediately - during the first two weeks of the semester you can change courses if you want or need to. At the beginning of the lecture period at the host university, it may make sense to wait a little and thus only have to change the learning agreement once and request the signatures of all parties.
Should this also affect your recognition agreement, please contact the professor responsible for the module and explain your substitution.
European Student Identifier (ESI) - a digital identifier that enables students to uniquely identify themselves when accessing online student mobility services. Currently, TU Dortmund University does not use this identifier, so students can leave this field blank when filling out the form.
