American Pragmatism, a branch of philosophy with contested boundaries and definitions, focuses on the practical, everyday effects of thought and philosophy. It is, in William James’ memorable definition, more interested in fruits than roots. Pragmatism has also influenced a wide array of writers, from Gertrude Stein to Susan Howe. In this course, we will read texts by some of the foundational figures of Pragmatism (including William James, Charles Peirce, and John Dewey) alongside literary works that engage with Pragmatic thought. While this course focuses on a particular branch of philosophy, it will hopefully allow us to think broadly about the connections (and divergences) between philosophy and literature.

Samuel Walker is a visiting instructor from the University of Virginia.
