Genres, motifs, narratives, or aesthetic principles have always been traveling from one medium to another across time, space, and cultures. In this course, we want to explore media and media studies from the 19th until the 21st century to find out what changes have come along with medial changes before and after the appearance of digital media and the social web. The digital has changed the look, feel, and practices of culture, most visibly in everyday and popular culture. How can the changes between 1800 and now be described, investigated, analyzed, and understood? What tools have popular-culture studies invented to tackle the medial changes of recent years?

There will be obligatory film viewing sessions on some Tuesdays starting at 4:15 p.m.

The theory will be made use of in extensive group presentations which will be introduced, discussed, and developed cooperatively, with the whole seminar group.
