This course explores the life and work of poet, essayist, and feminist public intellectual Adrienne Rich. As we examine Rich’s biography,
poems, and essays, our class will explore questions in relation to the nature of genre (How does a poem argue differently than an essay?), the politics of gender and feminist theory (Does Adrienne Rich deserve a more prominent place among seminal feminist philosophers like Simone de Beauvoir and Judith Butler?), and the extent to which we should consult an author’s biography when we study their literary creation (Always, never, case-by-case?).
Elliott Niblock is a visiting instructor from the University of Virginia.
