New Narrative aimed to mix high and low culture, sex and theory, gossip and mass culture. Founded as a project to create an accurate, multi-layered narrative representation of American queer identity during the AIDS epidemic, its original members fanned the flames of transgression, pulling apart the seams of what truth, storytelling, and art could and should do. In this class, we will learn about the underground history of queer art and identity and explore how it contrasted and overlapped with mass American culture, tracing a path through historical work toward a contemporary understanding of the New Narrative Artist. We will embrace the legitimacy of gossip, encounter conversational queer theory, and engage with artists whose work shuns the idea of a single national identity, all with the intention of showcasing an accurate representation of the fragmented nature of the Queer American self.

Please note: Besonders empfohlen für die Angewandten Studiengänge. Georgie Fehringer is a visiting instructor from the University of Iowa.

We will engage with the writing of Robert Gluck, Kathy Acker, and Eileen Myles, as well as the art and media of Renee Gladman and Tisa Bryant.
