According to the UN Refugee Agency, there are currently 82.4 million forcibly displaces people worldwide, 20.7 million of them being classified as refugees. Even though the terms “refugee” and “immigrant” signify very different migratory experiences, they are still often used interchangeably. Additionally, while many American narratives do include immigrant experiences, often connected to ideas of the American Dream and the Rags to Riches narrative, only few narratives of and on refugees can be found.

This course will dive into the complex topic of refugee writing and discuss different refugee grpups. We will read and closely analyze texts written by refugees from Southeast Asia and investigate similarities and differences of refugee/immigrant narratives.

Please purchase and start reading the following novels:
Vaddey Ratner. In the Shadow of the Banyan. (2012)
