Cities are being constructed in many US-American texts across all genres and media as dark and Gothic, as exciting, threatening, treacherous, nostalgic, as soundscapes, science-fiction scenarios, or allegories. We will read theories from urban studies and examine the relationship between scripting the urban in different media across time and genres. How is the city portrayed? What is its function? How do individual characters position themselves within the cityscape?
In this seminar, students will participate in an extensive group presentation. The group will design their own presentation which will be introduced, discussed, and developed cooperatively, with the whole seminar group.
There will be compulsory screening sessions on some Tuesdays starting at 4:00 p.m.
