This seminar will continue the line of Dortmund student translation projects – and publications – of American poetry (Walt Whitman, Jimmy Carter, June Jordan, Karen Head).

In Fall 2022, we started translating second-generation holocaust writer Elizabeth Rosner’s poetry volume gravity (2014) using translation as resource for interpretation. This is the second and final seminar translating this book. Rosner’s poetry deals with the experiences of the survivors’ families and their attempts to find a place for themselves in the post-Holocaust universe. The seminar will provide an introduction to Second Generation Holocaust literature as well as to Literary Translation.

The seminar will combine plenary seminar work with small-group instruction. The book will be published in 2024; participants will be listed as co-translators.

The seminar will combine plenary seminar work with small group instruction. Regular class time will be from 16:00 - 17.30; the period from 17.30 - 19:00 is reserved for individual discussion with presentation groups and any questions participants may have.
