Cities are being constructed in many US-American texts across all genres and media as dark and Gothic, as exciting, threatening, treacherous, nostalgic, as soundscapes, science-fiction scenarios, or allegories. We will read theories from urban studies and examine the relationship between different media and the city across time and genres. How is the city portrayed? What is its function? How do individual characters position themselves within the cityscape?

This course is particularly recommended for students of the Angewandte Studiengänge.

In this seminar, students will participate in an extensive group presentation. The group will design their own presentation which will be introduced, discussed, and developed cooperatively, with the whole seminar group.
In addition, there will be compulsory film screening sessions on some Tuesdays starting at 4:00 p.m. which are obligatory
