Seminar sessions are 3 hrs. each and are held weekly. As a result, this seminar will be completed in December. All coursework must therefore be completed and submitted in December.

The contemporary metropolis serves as a geographic hub connecting a diverse set of individuals stemming from a broad range of nations, ethnicities, religions, sexualities, and social classes. It thus comes as no surprise that the metropolis provides a unique experience located on a vast spectrum with isolation, anonymity, estrangement, division, and conflict on one end, and diversity, multiculturalism, integration, cooperation, and community on the other.
In this class, we will explore the intricate interplay of geography, identity, representation, and other factors that are at play in the city as well as the corresponding literary representations. We will also investigate how literary depictions of the city across different countries, genres, and epochs not only mirror the complex urban network but also inform a critical understanding of this environment, thus revealing underlying cultural discourses surrounding space, identity, culture, and history, amongst others.
