In the past, fantasy literature has faced frequent criticism for its reputed escapist tendencies, lack of political engagement, and proximity to children’s literature. Much criticism has further surrounded the assumption that fantasy literature is limited to formulaic plot structures and thus provides limited room for innovation. In this seminar, we will seek to debunk such views and criticism by exploring the contemporary literary trend of combining both fantasy and crime fiction elements. For this purpose, this class will provide participants with a deeper understanding of the two individual genres and explore how they are amalgamating into a new literary tradition. This seminar will cover a broad range of thematic aspects, including gender, ethnicity, (dis)ability, as well as the interrelation between the characters’ identities and space.

A list of required reading will be made available during the first session.

Course assessment will be offered in the form of:

  • written exam
  • short oral presentation
  • portfolio & expert session

Personal attendance during the first session is required to maintain enrolment status.
