William Shakespeare's Hamlet is without doubt one of the most important Western texts of the past one thousand years. It has fascinated and puzzled readers all over the world and through the centuries: according to Stephen Greenblatt, "Hamlet at once invites and resists interrogation". Moreover, the tragedy of the Danish prince has inspired a myriad of artists who have retold and adapted the story.

In this seminar, we will not only pay close attention to Shakespeare's versions of the text and his influences, but we will also discuss stage productions and film adaptations as well as re-writings or intertexts that comment on Shakespeare's tragedy. These range from Goethe to Bjarne P. Holmsen, from Laurence Olivier to Aki Kaurismäki, and from Tom Stoppard to Margaret Atwood, John Updike or Ian McEwan.
