As we head further into the 21st Century, the range of existential threats to humanity seems to be limitless: climate change, natural disaster, political upheaval, fake news, and, of course, new and more virulent diseases. But humanity is changing too – biotechnology, augmented prostheses, and neural implants mean that we are also entering a phase in which we are pushing beyond the conventional boundaries and finding new ways to identify and determine ourselves, pushing towards post—or perhaps trans—humanism.
This course is concerned both with works that deal with the world as we find it now, as well as those that look towards possible future directions for humanity and/or the planet. The focus is on environmental and planetary concerns, overwhelming though they might be, and the role of the human within them.
The requirements for the course are regular attendance and homework, a presentation, and an essay.
