The course offers insights into English on the African continent, with a focus on the former British colonies. English shapes the linguistic landscape in most parts of the continent by being an official or co-official language of 21 states and by being used as a lingua franca in many others. Sociolinguistic and structural aspects of the spread and present-day use of English will be discussed by applying a diachronic perspective. Participants of the course will gain a thorough understanding of the complexities and dynamics of English as used in Africa today. The course begins with an exploration of the historical trajectories and sheds light on the diverse pathways through which English was transplanted to Africa. English arrived in some parts of the continent in pre-colonial times, and in others during the colonial or even post-colonial period. The course delves into the rich array of English varieties used in African countries today. This includes pidgin Englishes, creoles, second-language varieties, as well as first-language varieties. In discussing the sociolinguistic factors, participants of the course will be able to examine the function and use of English across various domains, such as education, media, administration, and literature, but also as a lingua franca in local markets and the internet. Throughout the course, participants will engage with theoretical frameworks and empirical research and will have the opportunity to analyse first-hand language data from different English-speaking regions of the African continent.
Course readings and requirements will be discussed in the first session.
