Epistemes in Linguistics

Course Information

Nr. Name Type Time Room Lecturer

In this class, we will explore how we ‘get to know’ about languages, i.e. ways of creating linguistic insight. We will look at different languages, linguistic ecologies, and communities of practice and discuss underlying assumptions, beliefs, and ideologies of commonly implemented frameworks. The class is designed for students with minimal prior knowledge as we start with basic assumptions about language and then move on to assess epistemes in linguistics in more depth. However, as much of our work in class will include ideologies and hierarchies in one way or another, students will have to critically engage with literature and contribute to in-class discussions.
