Across the world many different varieties of English are spoken as native, second and foreign languages. This class will look at different varieties of English such as Postcolonial Englishes (PCEs), non-Postcolonial Englishes (non-PCEs), and English as a lingua franca (ELF). The class will explore the expansion of English and the development of the different Englishes mentioned, as well as introducing theoretical models of and approaches towards World Englishes. It will look at some specific (socio)linguistic characteristics of PCE’s, non-PCEs and ELF, as well as investigating some attitudes different Englishes. In addition to that, the course will provide an introduction to linguistic research methods and data collection.

Course readings and requirements will be discussed in the first session.
