This course explores how language shapes and is shaped by society. We will cover a wide variety of topics including languages vs. dialects, speech communities, multilingualism, language contact and the ethnography of communication. In this course, language variation and change will be examined by investigating how patterns of language use correlate with factors such as age, gender, ethnicity, social class and geographical distribution of speakers. We will also consider how sociolinguistic knowledge can help us to understand real-world issues, for example in education or language policy and planning.

This course will introduce students to core concepts and methods in sociolinguistics through the analysis of real-world sociolinguistic data.

Course readings will be discussed in the first session.

Course requirements will be discussed in the first session.
