This seminar will study varieties of English found in Ireland together with their socio-historical context. We will examine traditional urban and rural southern Irish dialects, northern Irish and Ulster Scots. In the light of the historical development of the varieties, we will explain their specific structure, vocabulary and phonology. We will further discuss research methodology and investigate sample corpora of Irish English varieties together and in small groups.

Course readings will be discussed in the first class.
