In this seminar we explore the role that language plays in the construction of individual and social identities. We will trace important factors in identity creation, in particular socioeconomic class, gender, ethnicity, religion and societal construals. These issues will be analysed against a background of both linguistic and cultural theory to show how society shapes language attitudes and identities.
