In this class, we will focus on the interface between morphology and syntax. We will learn about the theoretical aspects of both the two core-linguistic fields and their contributions to understanding and describing language use. Furthermore, we will discuss and analyze linguistic processes that represent interface phenomena and see why compounds might be understood as phrases rather than words. While the main focus of our inquiries will be English, we will also use examples from other languages as well as from language learners to ensure comprehensive understanding. Exercises and questions will be talked about in class. The class is designed for students with minimal prior knowledge as we start with basic concepts of morphology and syntax and then move on to assess interface phenomena in more depth. However, as much of our work in class will be based on theoretical knowledge as well as on research that has been conducted, students will have to critically engage with literature and contribute to in-class discussions. Course readings are, therefore, mandatory to be able to follow in class. Additional readings will be announced individually if necessary.
