The aims of this course are to explore the major grammatical changes that are underway in British and American English, as well as in varieties of English around the world. The course takes a largely corpus linguistics approach, and participants will gain experience in working with a range of different corpora to investigate grammatical features of contemporary English. In addition to this, participants will be introduced to other means of researching English grammar, specifically acceptability judgement tests and elicitation tests. Finally, participants will look at English grammar in traditional spoken and written as well as in online registers.
