The Language of Religion

Course Information

Nr. Name Type Time Room Lecturer
154151 The Language of Religion 2 HS We 08:30 - 10:00 R. 3.205 Wilson

This course looks at the relationship between language and religion. We begin by examining the use of language in the spoken prayers and traditional texts of the three main monotheistic faiths- Judaism, Christianity and Islam- and consider how language in these contexts can be linked to tradition and identity. The major focus of the course, however, will be to look at language use in religion critically. We will consider how language is used to persuade believers, and to control, and how religious language can be used as a means of creating in and out groups. Finally, we will consider the role of religious organisations in facilitating language maintenance and promoting literacy among immigrant communities.

There is no set text for this course. The readings will be provided in advance.
